“Bands in the Courtyard ” 2017
Once again this year we will be holding a series of outdoor gigs on Saturday nights throughout the spring, summer & autumn. We are also now holding a number of gigs on a Friday night as well.
All the Gigs start at approx. 9.30pm & the bands play until approx. 11.45pm. The gigs are free. Please note that we close the main doors of the pub & the courtyard gates at 11.00 pm prompt so you need to be in the pub by that time to enjoy the rest of the night. Last orders at midnight.
Please may we remind you that the gigs do take place outdoors & even on the fairest of evenings temperatures drop as the sun goes down. Although we do have outdoor heaters in the performance area it is always advisable to bring another layer of clothing with you for your comfort.
Here’s a list of forthcoming gigs here at the Arden Arms. The second list for the rest of August & September 2017 includes gigs on the Friday11th, Saturday12th & Sunday afternoon 13th August scheduled to celebrate Joe & Steve’s retirement from The Arden Arms. We’d love to see you here sometime over the weekend!
Our Regular Meetings
The”Arden” is well used on a regular basis by local societies & clubs who find the convivial atmosphere conducive to getting business done & having an enjoyable evening at the same time. Here’s a list of the clubs we entertain on a regular basis & the other events which take place weekly. Where appropriate, we’ve provided links to websites & blogs so you can get more information on the various groups & contact them yourself.
Jazz at the Arden
We’ve held a regular jazz night on Monday evenings for many years now & it’s a popular & lively evening. That’s down to our now resident band “Louisiana Highway”, a trio playing good old tunes, New Orleans standards, rhythm & blues & anything else they fancy. They come with an immaculate pedigree- read about trumpeteer Dave Copperwaite’s life in music in Just Jazz Magazine, July 2008 and more here. They kick off at 8.30 & play till late. Admission is free & a buffet is thrown in halfway through. What more could you want!
Charity Quiz Night
If it’s Tuesday night, it’s “Charity Quiz Night” at the “Arden”! A recently revamped format with a regular following held every Tuesday night, starting at about 9.30. A variety of topics ensures everyone can join in & enjoy. The aim is a bit of fun & some brain teasing. If your Team comes top, you are treated to a round of drinks from the bar. A free buffet is provided after the quiz. A £1 to join in & all proceeds currently go to the Alzheimer’s Society. In our opinion a very worthy cause. We have already raised over £10,000 over the past few years – please come along & support a great cause. We guarantee you a fun evening
Stockport P.L.U.S. Group
People Like Us, Stockport or PLUS for short is a social group for the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgendered community. This has been established to give those who want an alternative to ‘The Scene’ somewhere to go. Workers from LGF in Manchester, Health Education, Police anti-hate crime, the CVS, Mind and Age Concern are giving assistance. In the longer term it is intended that members will run the group and the professionals will continue to be available for information and support.
Meetings are on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at the Arden Arms, Millgate. Other activities include keep fit, country walks, meditation and drinking.
For more information please visit us at www.stockportplus.org or telephone us on 07717 038 868. You are very welcome
Robinsons Fishing Club
Robinson’s Fishing Club is a small friendly group started in the late 80’s, currently around 22 members, new members most welcome. They meet on the 2nd Thursday of the month at 8pm.
Stockport Heritage Trust
We are fortunate enough to entertain the members of the Stockport Heritage Trust for a swift pint after work on most market days. The Stockport Heritage Trust is based in the Heritage Centre in St Marys Church, just over the road from the pub. A visit to the Centre is thoroughly recommended if you have any interest in the local history of this town. The group campaigned singlehandedly for many years for the restoration of Staircase House in the Market Place, left to rot for decades. The House is now restored & the scheme is a huge success and all credit to Steve Cliffe & his colleagues for their dogged persistence in the face of decades of bureaucratic apathy & financial neglect. The group is always organising heritage events in the town & is always eager to recruit new people who may wish to take an active role in these fun events.Visit the Stockport Heritage Trust at http://stockporttrust.blogspot.com/.
Copies of “Stockport & District Heritage”, the quarterly magazine of the Trust are for sale widely &also behind the bar of the “Arden Arms”, priced £2.40
That’s all the groups who at the moment meet at the “Arden” regularly. We would welcome enquiries from any other groups or organisations who would like to use our facilities either on a regular basis or as a one off. We will make all efforts to find room for you & make you welcome. Please note that we do not charge for the use of rooms by groups. Food can be arranged at a reasonable cost by prior arrangement
The Courtyard at the “Arden Arms”
As well as being used daily for lunchtime drinking & dining & bands on Saturday evenings in the summer , the courtyard of the “Arden Arms” is also a fabulous space for outdoor events. Who can forget Joe’s 60th Bash in April 200? We regularly host parties in the courtyard in spring & summer. Please get in touch if you’ve got a special birthday or anniversary coming up. We will be happy to arrange all the details & can provide a buffet & marquee for you & your guests.
